ChatGPT video editor: how to set it up and use it

To use ChatGPT as a video editor, connect a video tool to it as a custom MCP server. On its own ChatGPT can plan an edit and write the text, but it won't hand you a finished video. With Easy Reels connected (Ultra plan), you describe the video, ChatGPT picks your clips and writes the edit, and Easy Reels renders an MP4 of up to 3 minutes. Setup takes a few minutes: add the server URL, sign in and click Allow.

A ChatGPT video editor is ChatGPT with a video tool plugged in. You describe the video in the chat, ChatGPT makes the editing decisions, and the connected tool renders the file. Without that tool, ChatGPT is a good planning partner and nothing more.

If you're still asking whether it's possible at all, can ChatGPT edit videos? answers that. This post is the practical part: how to set it up, what to type, and where it stops.

What can ChatGPT do as a video editor on its own?

In a plain chat, ChatGPT works with words and images. That's still useful before you edit:

TaskChatGPT aloneChatGPT with Easy Reels connected
Plan the shot orderYesYes
Write hooks, on-screen text, captionsYesYes, and puts them in the video
Find clips in your libraryNoYes, with notes for next time
Look inside a long recordingNoYes: timestamped frames and a transcript
Cut, trim and add transitionsNoYes
Export an MP4NoYes, up to 3 minutes
Run saved templates and batchesNoYes, up to 50 at a time

The left column leaves you in an editing app afterwards. The right column is where ChatGPT becomes the editor.

How do you connect ChatGPT to a video editor?

ChatGPT adds outside tools through MCP, the Model Context Protocol. MCP video editing explains the idea. Here are the steps for Easy Reels.

1. Get the right plan

The Easy Reels MCP is on Ultra ($39 a month) and Foundation. Ultra starts with a 14-day free trial: cancel before it ends and you aren't charged. See pricing. On the ChatGPT side, custom MCP servers are part of the paid plans, so check that yours includes them.

2. Add the server

In ChatGPT, click Plugins in the left sidebar, then Add in the top right corner, and choose Add custom MCP server. Name it Easy Reels, paste https://mcp.easyreels.io/mcp as the Server URL and keep Authentication on OAuth. Tick the confirmation and click Create as a plugin.

3. Sign in and allow

ChatGPT sends you to Easy Reels. Sign in and choose Allow. There's no API key to copy.

4. Turn it on in a chat

Open a new chat, open Plugins under the message box and switch Easy Reels on. The full walkthrough with screenshots is on Easy Reels in ChatGPT.

How do you edit a video with ChatGPT, step by step?

Once it's connected, a video is a short conversation.

  1. Say what you want. Format, length, footage and feel: "A 20-second 9:16 reel of the Lisbon trip, fast cuts, the tram shot first, warm look, no music."
  2. Let it find the clips. ChatGPT searches your Easy Reels workspace and keeps notes on what each file shows, so the next chat finds them faster. If you'd rather choose, name the folder or the files, or upload new clips to your Easy Reels library first.
  3. For long recordings, name the moment. "Her answer about pricing, about 30 seconds." ChatGPT looks at frames labelled with their timestamps and a transcript before it cuts. The same workflow is in cutting a long video into reels with Claude, and it works the same way in ChatGPT.
  4. It writes the edit. Scene order, in and out points, speed, transitions, text, music or the clips' own sound, and a filter or your own LUT.
  5. Easy Reels renders it. The MP4 lands in My Generations, with the fonts and filters you use in the app.
  6. Ask for changes in plain words. "Swap the second clip, shorter text, hold the last shot longer." It renders a new version.

Prompts that work well

  • "Use only clips from the Product folder, 4:5 for the feed, 15 seconds."
  • "Start on the best close-up, put the hook in large text for the first two seconds."
  • "Make a 16:9 version of the same edit for YouTube."
  • "Make 20 more of my weekly tips template with these five new hooks."

The last one uses a saved template. ChatGPT can list your Easy Reels templates, add copy you give it, and generate one video or a batch of up to 50. It asks before a batch. How to batch-create reels covers the template side.

What are the limits of ChatGPT as a video editor?

Worth knowing before you start:

  • It edits your footage; it doesn't generate any. Nothing on screen is invented. If you need new shots, you film them or use stock.
  • Length and shape. Up to 3 minutes, in 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9.
  • No frame-by-frame work. You describe changes; you don't scrub a timeline. For precise manual edits, a timeline editor is still the right tool.
  • The hook is still yours. Tell ChatGPT what the opening should be and check it in the first render. Reel hooks is the short guide.
  • Plans on both sides. Easy Reels Ultra or Foundation, and a ChatGPT plan with custom MCP servers.

Common questions

Is there a free ChatGPT video editor?

Planning an edit in ChatGPT works on any plan. Rendering needs a connected tool, and the Easy Reels MCP is on Ultra: $39 a month after a 14-day free trial, and if you cancel before the trial ends you aren't charged.

Can ChatGPT edit a video I upload in the chat?

ChatGPT edits footage in your Easy Reels workspace, so upload new clips to your Easy Reels library and ChatGPT can use them from there. The finished video is saved in Easy Reels.

Does the same setup work in Claude?

Yes. The same server address works in Claude, Cursor and other MCP apps. See can Claude edit videos?.

How is this different from an AI video generator?

A generator invents footage from a prompt. ChatGPT with Easy Reels edits footage you filmed. AI video editor compares the kinds.
