Ask Claude to "edit this clip into a reel" in a plain chat and you get good advice and no video. That isn't a limit of its judgement. It's a missing pair of hands: Claude can decide what the edit should be, but nothing in a chat window can cut footage or hand you a file.
A connector is what adds the hands.
What Claude can't do on its own
Claude reads text and looks at images. It has no video encoder, no access to the files on your phone and nowhere to put an export. So without help it can:
- write a shot list or a script for the reel
- suggest where to cut, if you describe the footage
- draft the hook and the on-screen text
All of that is useful, and all of it still leaves you doing the editing by hand in another app. If you're new to that part, video editing for beginners covers it.
What a connector changes
A connector (technically, an MCP server) gives Claude tools it can call during the chat. For video that means three new abilities: receive your files, look at them, and send an edit to software that renders it.
The split of work is the useful part. Claude makes the decisions: which moment of which clip, in what order, with what transition and what text. The video tool does the mechanical work: trimming, scaling, grading, mixing the sound, encoding. MCP video editing explains how that handoff works in more detail.
What Claude can do with your footage
With Easy Reels in Claude, the edit Claude writes can include:
| Part of the edit | What Claude decides | What gets rendered |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 | A video up to 3 minutes |
| Clips | Which part of each clip, and at what speed | Trims, slow motion or up to 4x faster |
| Order | The sequence of scenes | Cuts or transitions between them |
| Photos | How long each holds, and whether it moves | A slow zoom or pan on the still |
| Sound | Clip audio, music, both or silence | A mixed track with even loudness |
| Text | Words, timing, font, position | Titles and captions in your fonts |
| Look | A filter, a LUT, a saved adjustment | The same grade as the app |
Transitions are a per-scene choice: hard cuts, fades, dissolves, wipes, slides, zooms. Reel transitions is a good guide to when each one helps and when it just gets in the way.
The footage is always yours. Nothing is generated, which matters for the reasons in what AI reel generators can and cannot make: invented footage gets scrolled past, your own footage doesn't.
Long videos are where it earns its keep
Finding the right 20 seconds in a 15-minute recording is the slow part of any edit. Before it cuts, Claude looks at frames pulled from the video, each labelled with its timestamp, and at a transcript of what is said. Then it trims to the moment you described instead of guessing.
How to cut a long video into reels with Claude walks through that workflow step by step.
What stays your call
Claude is good at the assembly. It is not you. Two decisions are still worth making yourself:
- The hook. The first seconds decide whether anyone stays, and they depend on knowing your audience. What the first three seconds have to do is the short version.
- The footage. A clear brief with weak material still gives you a weak video.
Tell Claude what the opening should be and check the first render's first seconds yourself. Ask for a change in plain words and it renders again.
How to set it up
- You need an Easy Reels account on Ultra (or Foundation). See pricing.
- In Claude.ai or Claude Desktop, open Connectors in Settings and add a custom connector with
https://mcp.easyreels.io/mcp. - Sign in to Easy Reels and choose Allow.
- In a chat, turn Easy Reels on from the tools menu, send your files and describe the video.
In Claude Code it's one command, listed on the Easy Reels in Claude page.
Common questions
Can Claude edit videos in a normal chat?
Not by itself. It can plan the edit and write the text, but it needs a connected video tool to render the file.
Do I need to know how to edit?
No. You describe the video the way you would brief an editor. Knowing what you want the viewer to feel helps more than knowing an editing app.
Does Claude see my whole library?
No. With Easy Reels in Claude, Claude only works with the files you send in that chat. A library file reaches it only when you pick it yourself in the upload panel.
Is the video made by AI?
The editing decisions are Claude's. The pictures and the sound come from the footage and music you gave it.
