Ask ChatGPT to turn your clips into a reel and you get a tidy shot list and some caption ideas. You don't get a video. The editing still happens somewhere else, by hand.
That changes when ChatGPT has a video tool plugged in. This post covers what it can't do alone, what one connection adds, and how to set it up.
What can't ChatGPT do on its own?
ChatGPT works with text and images. A chat has no way to cut footage or export a file, so on its own it can:
- plan the reel: the hook, the order of the shots, where the text goes
- write the on-screen text and the caption
- tell you where to cut, if you describe the footage
Useful, and it still leaves you in an editing app afterwards. Video editing for beginners covers that manual part.
What does one connection change?
ChatGPT can add custom MCP servers. MCP (the Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI app call outside tools in the middle of a chat. MCP video editing explains the idea in more depth.
Easy Reels is one of those servers. Once it's connected, the work splits in two:
- ChatGPT makes the decisions: which part of which clip goes where, and what the text says.
- Easy Reels does the rendering: trims, scaling, the colour grade, the sound mix and the MP4, with the same fonts and filters as the app.
The footage is always yours. Nothing is generated, which is the difference from the tools in what AI reel generators can and cannot make.
Two ways ChatGPT can make a video
1. A new edit from a description
You describe the video ("a 20-second reel of the Lisbon trip, fast cuts, the tram shot first, no music") and ChatGPT writes the edit from scratch. No template, no beat grid. It looks through your Easy Reels workspace for the footage, a batch of files at a time, and keeps notes on what each file shows, so the next chat finds the same clips faster.
For a long recording it looks before it cuts: frames labelled with their timestamps, and a transcript of what is said. Then it trims to the part you asked for. How to cut a long video into reels with Claude walks through that workflow, and it works the same way from ChatGPT.
What you can get back:
| Part of the edit | What ChatGPT decides | What Easy Reels renders |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 | An MP4 up to 3 minutes |
| Clips | Which part, at what speed | Trims, slow motion, speed-ups |
| Photos | How long each holds, and if it moves | A slow zoom or pan |
| Sound | Clip audio, music, both or silence | One mixed track |
| Text | Words, timing, font, position | Titles in your fonts |
| Look | A filter or your own LUT | The same grade as the app |
2. Your saved templates, one video or a batch
This is the newer half. If you already use Easy Reels templates, ChatGPT can work with them from the chat:
- list your templates and show what one is made of
- build a new one, or change its layers, audio and filters
- add the copy the template draws from (only the words you give it)
- generate one video or carousel, or a batch of up to 50 into a folder in My Generations
It asks before a batch, before deleting a template and before removing copy. That makes "make 20 more of the weekly tips reel with these five new hooks" a single message instead of an afternoon. The manual version is in how to batch-create reels from one folder of footage.
How do you connect ChatGPT to Easy Reels?
- You need an Easy Reels account on Ultra ($39 a month) or Foundation. Ultra starts with a 14-day free trial: cancel before it ends and nothing is charged. See pricing.
- In ChatGPT, click Plugins in the left sidebar, then Add in the top right corner, and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Name it Easy Reels, paste
https://mcp.easyreels.io/mcpas the Server URL and keep Authentication on OAuth. Tick the confirmation and click Create as a plugin. - ChatGPT sends you to Easy Reels. Sign in and choose Allow.
- In a new chat, open Plugins under the message box, turn Easy Reels on and describe the video.
The finished MP4 lands in the app, in My Generations and on the MCP page. The full steps with screenshots are on Easy Reels in ChatGPT. Custom MCP servers are part of ChatGPT's paid plans, so check that yours includes them.
What is still your call?
The connection does the assembly. Two things stay with you:
- The hook. The first seconds decide whether anyone stays. Tell ChatGPT what the opening should be, then check it in the first render. Reel hooks is the short guide.
- The footage. A clear brief with weak material still makes a weak video.
Ask for changes in plain words ("swap the second clip, shorter text") and it renders a new version.
Common questions
Can ChatGPT edit videos for free?
Planning an edit works on any ChatGPT plan. Rendering one needs a connected video tool: Easy Reels MCP is on the Ultra plan ($39 a month after a 14-day free trial), and custom MCP servers need a paid ChatGPT plan.
Do I need an API key?
No. You paste the address, sign in to Easy Reels and click Allow. You can disconnect from the MCP page in the app at any time.
Can ChatGPT see my whole library?
It can use everything in the connected workspace, minus the folders and files you exclude on the MCP page. It never reads it all at once: it looks at 50 files at a time and keeps notes for the next chat.
Does it work in Claude too?
Yes, with the same address. Can Claude edit videos? covers the Claude side, and any other app that adds MCP servers can connect the same way.
