A YouTube Shorts maker is any tool that gets you a vertical video of three minutes or less, ready to upload. YouTube has one built in, and for many Shorts that's enough. The others earn their place when you're cutting to music, pulling clips out of long videos, or posting Shorts every day.
This guide covers the spec every Short has to meet, five kinds of tools that make them, and how to pick by where your footage comes from. For the upload steps (title, thumbnail, first second), see how to make YouTube Shorts.
What does YouTube count as a Short?
Shape and length, nothing else. According to YouTube Help, videos uploaded since 15 October 2024 that are square or vertical and up to three minutes long are treated as Shorts. A #shorts tag doesn't decide it.
| Spec | Requirement | What to export |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | Square or vertical | 9:16 |
| Resolution | Not fixed | 1080 × 1920 or higher |
| Length | Up to 3 minutes | 15 to 60 seconds for most topics |
| File | Any common format | MP4, H.264 |
| Text placement | Not enforced | Clear of the bottom and right edges |
Vertical video size has the safe area margins, where YouTube's title and buttons cover the frame.
Is YouTube's own Shorts maker good enough?
Often, yes. In the YouTube app, tap Create, then Create a Short, and record in segments or import clips. The editor has a timeline where you can trim, reorder and delete clips, add timed text, and layer music from YouTube's sound library.
It also has Edit into a Short: open one of your own long videos, use the remix option, pick a segment and a layout, and it becomes a new Short. For a channel with a back catalog, that's the quickest free route.
Where it stops: precise cuts to music, consistent text styling across many videos, and doing the same edit again next week. YouTube has announced a conversational editing assistant for Shorts, planned for early 2027, so the built-in tool will keep changing.
Which YouTube Shorts maker fits which job?
| Tool | Best for | Cost | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts editor | Quick clips, segments of your own long videos | Free | Basic styling, one at a time |
| CapCut | Effects, keyframes, captions | Free tier, paid Pro | Pro items watermark the export unless you subscribe |
| Opus Clip, Vizard | Finding moments in podcasts and streams | Free tiers, paid plans | AI picks the moments; free tiers watermark |
| Desktop editors (Resolve, Final Cut Pro) | Careful edits, camera footage | Resolve free; Final Cut Pro $299.99 | Slower per video |
| Easy Reels | Beat-cut Shorts from your own clips, at volume | $19 or $39 a month, 14-day trial | No timeline; music-led videos |
CapCut: the free all-rounder
CapCut gives you a full timeline on a phone or computer, auto captions and Auto Cut, which slices clips to a song's beat. Set the canvas to 9:16 and export at 1080p or higher. It edits one video at a time, and the free tier has narrowed; our CapCut review has the details.
Clip tools: when the Short is inside a long video
If your Shorts come from podcasts, webinars or streams, an AI clipper like Opus Clip or Vizard reads the recording and hands back ranked clips with captions. Good for discovery, less good when you already know the moment you want. Opus Clip alternatives compares them, and turning one long video into a week of reels covers doing it by hand.
Easy Reels: when the Short is cut to music
Easy Reels is built for Shorts made of b-roll, products, places or events set to a song. You upload a track, it detects the beats, and your own clips and photos are assigned to the cuts, with your color filter and saved text on top. It renders a 1440 × 2560 MP4 of up to 60 seconds, which uploads as a Short as is.
The edit is saved as a template, so the next Short is one click, and a batch makes 10 on Pro or 50 on Ultra, each drawing different clips. On Ultra you can also connect Easy Reels to Claude or ChatGPT. The AI looks at timestamped frames and a transcript of a long recording first. Then it cuts the part you ask for, and Easy Reels renders it, up to 3 minutes. See MCP video editing.
It isn't the right Shorts maker for talking-head videos that need captions from speech in templates, or for edits that need effects. YouTube's editor or CapCut fits those better.
How do you pick the right Shorts maker?
- Start from your footage. A long video you already published: Edit into a Short. A long recording you haven't: a clip tool, or the Easy Reels MCP to cut the moment you name. Clips and photos: CapCut or Easy Reels.
- Decide what drives the edit. Speech means captions matter; music means cuts on the beat matter.
- Count how many you need. One a week, any tool works. One a day in the same format, save the format as a template.
- Export once and reuse it. A clean 1080 × 1920 file posts to Reels and TikTok too. Posting one video to Reels, TikTok and Shorts explains why you upload it natively to each.
The result is one tool per source of footage, and a file you can post to all three apps.
If your Shorts are music-led, try Easy Reels free for 14 days, then $19 a month for Pro or $39 for Ultra; cancel before the trial ends and you're not charged. See pricing.
Common questions
What is the best free YouTube Shorts maker?
YouTube's own editor for quick clips and segments of your long videos, and CapCut for anything with effects or many cuts. Both are free; CapCut puts some features behind Pro.
Can I make YouTube Shorts on a computer?
Yes. Edit in any desktop or browser tool, export a vertical MP4, and upload it from YouTube Studio. YouTube classifies it as a Short from its shape and length.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to three minutes since October 2024. Most Shorts that work are well under a minute, so treat three minutes as a ceiling.
Can I turn a long YouTube video into Shorts?
Yes. Edit into a Short works on your own uploads in the YouTube app. For many clips at once, use a clip tool, or describe the moment to Claude or ChatGPT with the Easy Reels MCP on Ultra.
