CapCut earned its position. It put layers, keyframes, captions and effects on a phone for nothing, and for several years the honest review was one line: use it. The review is longer now because the free version has been shrinking while the paid one got more expensive, and both of those change who it suits.
What is CapCut?
CapCut is a video editor owned by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. It runs on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and in a browser, and a project can move between them through a CapCut account.
It is a full timeline editor rather than a trimming app. There are multiple video and audio tracks, keyframes, speed curves, masks, a large library of effects and templates, and a set of AI tools layered on top. That is the reason it is compared with desktop editors rather than with other phone apps.
What does CapCut cost?
The figures below were read on 30 September 2026. Source for the monthly prices: the US App Store listing. Source for the annual Pro price: CapCut's own page comparing its plans. CapCut states that prices vary by region, platform, tax and promotion, so check the paywall inside the app before trusting any number here.

The annual figure is the one that changed. According to Newsweek's reporting in February 2026, the yearly Pro plan rose from about $77 to $179.99 with no formal announcement. For anyone who subscribed at the old price, renewal is the moment to decide again.
What is still free, and what needs Pro?
This is the part most reviews get wrong, because it moved. The rows below are taken from CapCut's help centre and its plan comparison page, as read in September 2026.

The watermark row deserves precision. According to CapCut's help centre, the watermark is applied when a project uses an asset marked Pro and you are not subscribed, and the app does not always make that obvious until export. A plain project built from your own footage is a different case: current guides describe a short branded ending clip added by default, which you can delete from the timeline, and no logo over the picture.
The 4K row is less certain than it looks. CapCut's help pages disagree with each other on whether free accounts are locked out of 4K or only limited in bitrate, so treat it as something to test on your own device.
The practical test is simple. Build the video you actually make, with the effects you actually use, and press export. Whatever happens then is the free tier for you.
What is CapCut genuinely good at?
- Speed to a finished video. Nothing else gets a beginner from clips to a captioned, scored vertical video as quickly.
- Effects and templates. The library is enormous and tracks what is current on TikTok, which is the point of it.
- A desktop app that matches the phone. Start on one, finish on the other.
- Colour. The desktop and web versions import
.cubeLUTs, which most phone editors cannot. Colour grading short video covers using one without overdoing it. - Captions. Accurate when you have access to them, and styled inside the same editor. Captions on reels covers doing them well.

Where does CapCut fall short?
The terms. CapCut's global terms of service, last updated on 15 April 2026, say plainly: "We don't own your User Content." They also grant CapCut a perpetual, worldwide, sub-licensable licence to use that content to operate and develop its services, and a licence to use your name and likeness to identify you, including in sponsored content. US users are covered by a separate US version. Read the one that applies to you, because summaries of it go stale within months.
Commercial use of its assets. This matters more than the content licence and gets less attention. According to CapCut's Materials License Agreement, updated 22 January 2026, its assets are split into non-commercial and dual-use material, and its commercial music is cleared for CapCut, TikTok and TikTok for Business. The shrinking free tier. Each year more sits behind the subscription. A workflow built on a free feature is a workflow that can acquire a price.
Device policies. Some employers and public bodies restrict ByteDance apps, so it may not be installable on a work phone at all.
Volume. CapCut edits one video at a time. There is no built-in way to produce twenty from a folder, and CapCut's own article on bulk editing points to a different product.
Is CapCut available in the US?
Yes. It was removed from US app stores on 18 and 19 January 2025 alongside TikTok, service resumed within days, and it returned to the App Store and Google Play on 13 February 2025, as widely reported at the time.
The longer-term question was settled in 2026. According to Variety's report on the deal, the TikTok US joint venture closed on 22 January 2026 and its safeguards also cover CapCut. The app is on the US App Store today and updated this month.
Can CapCut cut a video to the beat?
Partly, and this is where expectations and reality differ most.
CapCut has two relevant tools. Beat markers place dots on the audio track where it detects beats, and you then drag each cut to a dot. AutoCut goes further: CapCut's help centre describes it as trimming and syncing raw footage to a selected track or beat pattern, on mobile and desktop.
Both work. Neither removes the repetition. Beat markers still leave you placing thirty cuts by hand, which is the job described in how to cut a video to the beat. AutoCut produces one video per run from the clips you select, in a style it chooses. If you post one montage a month, that is fine, and making a video montage walks through it.
If you post the same format several times a week, the editor is no longer the bottleneck. The repetition is. The verdict
Use CapCut if you are learning to edit, you make one video at a time and want it to look current, or you need captions and effects without a desktop editor.
Pay for Pro if you rely on its templates and effects every week and have checked the annual price against what it saves you. If you only need one Pro feature, look for it elsewhere first. Submagic alternatives covers the caption tools, for example.
