CapCut vs Edits: which free editor to use for reels

Use Edits if you film on your phone, post mostly to Instagram and want a free editor with no watermark and no paid tier. Use CapCut if you need a desktop or web editor, automatic beat cuts, speed curves or its large effects library, and you can accept that Pro-tagged assets watermark the export unless you pay ($19.99 a month or $179.99 a year for Pro, read September 2026). Neither one cuts a whole series of reels for you; for the same format every week, a template tool fits better.

If you post reels, you have probably been told to switch twice in a year: first to CapCut because it was the free editor everyone used, then to Edits because Instagram made its own. Both are good. They're good at different things, and the wrong pick costs you either a watermark at export time or an afternoon rebuilding a project on a bigger screen.

Details below come from each app's own pages and our earlier reviews of CapCut and Edits, checked September and October 2026. Both apps change often, so check the export screen on your own phone before you commit.

Which one is free?

Edits is free with no paid tier. CapCut has a free tier with the full timeline, but it narrows each year: any effect, font or template tagged Pro puts a watermark on the export unless you subscribe, and the yearly Pro price rose from about $77 to $179.99 in early 2026, according to Newsweek's reporting. If "free" is the deciding factor, Edits wins.

Which one is better for beat sync?

CapCut is the stronger of the two here. Its Auto Cut places your clips on the beat of a song for you. Edits shows beat markers on the timeline, which helps, but you still drag every cut onto them. Beat sync apps compared explains the difference between marking beats and cutting on them.

Which one is better for Instagram?

If you post mostly to Instagram, Edits is the better fit. It shares straight to Instagram and Facebook, exports up to 4K with no watermark, and its Insights tab shows how each reel performs. Meta hasn't confirmed that reels made in Edits get more reach, so don't switch for that reason alone.

CapCut works fine for Instagram too. The catch is music: according to CapCut's Materials License Agreement, its commercial library is cleared for CapCut, TikTok and TikTok for Business. A client reel or an ad on Instagram with a CapCut library track is outside that. Music for reels and copyright lists the safe routes.

Which one works on a computer?

CapCut is the only one of the two that does. It has Windows and macOS apps and a browser version, and a project can move between devices through your account. Edits is phone-only. If you edit on a Mac or a laptop, that settles it. Video editors for Mac covers the other desktop options.

Who should pick which?

  • Pick Edits if you film and edit on your phone, post mostly to Instagram, and want no watermark and no subscription.
  • Pick CapCut if you post to TikTok first, edit on a computer, or rely on Auto Cut, speed curves and trending effects.
  • Use both if you like Edits for Instagram and CapCut for TikTok. Many creators do.

A note for teams: some employers block ByteDance apps on work phones, and some reviewers note that Edits makes switching between several Instagram accounts awkward. Check both before you train a team on either.

What if you post the same kind of reel every week?

Both apps edit one video at a time. A template in Edits or CapCut gives you someone else's timing, and you still place each clip by hand, every week.

Easy Reels works the other way round. You build your format once: the song, the cut pattern, your text styles and a colour look. Each new reel pulls fresh clips from the folders you chose and cuts them on the beat, with no timeline. A batch is 10 videos on Pro or 50 on Ultra. It runs in the browser and is free for 14 days, then $19 a month (plans and prices). Start the free trial with one format you already post. Batch-creating reels shows what that looks like.

Common questions

Is Edits better than CapCut?

For Instagram-first creators on a phone, often yes: it's free, has no watermark and shows reel analytics. CapCut is better for automatic beat cuts, desktop editing and TikTok trends.

Does Edits have a watermark?

No. Edits exports without a watermark.

Is CapCut still free in 2026?

Yes, with limits. The editor is free, but Pro-tagged effects and templates watermark the export unless you subscribe. CapCut pricing has the details.

Can I use Edits on a computer?

No. Edits is on iPhone and Android only. CapCut has desktop and web versions.

Can I move a CapCut project into Edits?

There's no import between them. Export the finished video from one app, or re-edit the clips in the other.
