Video editing AI tool: the right one for each job

Pick a video editing AI tool by the job, not the brand. For removing silences and filler words, Descript. For captions, CapCut's free auto captions, or Submagic for a styled look. For reframing to vertical, CapCut or Premiere Pro's Auto Reframe. For cutting clips to music at volume, Easy Reels. For generated b-roll, a text-to-video model. For editing by describing the video, Claude or ChatGPT with a video tool connected over MCP.

Choosing a video editing AI tool gets easier once you stop asking "which is the best" and ask "which job am I trying to skip". Every tool on the market is strong at one or two tasks and average at the rest. Matching the task to the tool saves you a subscription you didn't need.

This guide goes job by job. If you want the bigger picture first (what AI editors are and how the kinds differ), read AI video editor: what it does and which kind you need. Tool details here come from each vendor's own pages, checked October 2026. Features change often, so confirm before you pay.

How do you remove silences with AI?

Use a tool that edits by transcript. Descript turns your recording into text and shows the pauses as gaps; its Shorten word gaps action trims them in bulk, with a length you set. On current plans it uses AI credits. Some users report it also catches laughter and unclear words, so listen through once before you export.

CapCut can cut pauses and filler words from a talking clip, which is enough for most short videos.

Easy Reels doesn't remove silences. It's built for footage cut to music, not talking heads.

Which AI tool is best for captions?

Start with the free one. CapCut's auto captions run on web, desktop and mobile, and they're accurate for clear speech. If the transcript is right, a paid caption tool is buying you style and speed, not accuracy.

Pay for Submagic, or a tool like it, when you want animated, styled captions without building a preset yourself. Submagic alternatives compares seven, and captions on reels covers size and position.

How do you reframe horizontal video to vertical?

Reframing tools track the main subject and crop a 16:9 shot into 9:16 so the person or product stays in view. CapCut's Auto Reframe does this on desktop. Premiere Pro has Auto Reframe built in, which suits you if you already edit there.

Check fast motion and two-person shots by hand. That's where trackers drift. Vertical video dimensions has the sizes to export.

What's the best AI tool for beat sync?

It depends on how often you make the same kind of video.

  • One video now and then: CapCut's Auto Cut. Pick a song and it slices your clips to the beat, free.
  • The same format every week: Easy Reels. Upload the song once and the beats are detected; choose Smart, every beat, every second beat or downbeats. Your clips are assigned to the cuts, and the song, filter, text and folders are saved as a template. Next time it's one click, or a batch of 10 (Pro) or 50 (Ultra), each with different clips.

How to cut video to the beat explains the cut patterns, and beat sync apps compares seven tools.

Can AI generate b-roll for you?

Yes, with limits. Text-to-video models such as Runway and Google Veo make a few seconds of new footage from a prompt. They're good for abstract shots and scenes you can't film, and weak at faces, hands and continuity across cuts.

Premiere Pro's Generative Extend is narrower and often more useful: it adds up to 2 seconds to the end of a clip that runs short.

If you need real footage instead, stock libraries are the safer bet. Easy Reels Ultra searches stock footage and music inside the library (100 imports a month) and can save a search as a folder that templates draw from.

Which AI tool edits a video from a description?

This is chat editing, the newest job on the list. You connect a video tool to Claude or ChatGPT over MCP, say what you want ("a 20-second reel of the launch, product shots first, our font") and the AI writes the edit while the tool renders it.

With the Easy Reels MCP (Ultra), the AI picks clips from your library, sets the order, cuts, transitions, text and optional music, and renders an MP4 in 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, up to 3 minutes, with your fonts and LUTs. For long recordings it looks at timestamped frames and a transcript before it cuts. MCP video editing explains how it works, and the setup is on the MCP page.

Common questions

Do I need more than one video editing AI tool?

Often, yes. A common pair is a free editor like CapCut for captions and quick fixes, plus one tool for your biggest repeat job: Descript for podcasts, Opus Clip for clipping, or Easy Reels for beat-cut reels at volume.

What is the best free AI video editing tool?

CapCut covers the most jobs for free: captions, reframing and Auto Cut. Paid tiers add more.

Does Easy Reels add captions or remove silences?

No. Easy Reels templates add text you write, from a saved design and a copy pool, and they're built around music. For captions from speech or silence removal, use CapCut or Descript.

Is AI-generated b-roll safe to post?

You can post it, but audiences notice synthetic footage, and some platforms label it. Use it as support behind your real footage, not as the whole video. AI reel generators covers what works.
