How to make a reel with multiple clips (that flows)

To make a reel with multiple clips in Instagram, tap + and Reel, tap the select option in the camera roll, pick your clips in the order you want them and tap Next. Each clip lands on the timeline, where you can trim it, drag it to a new spot or delete it. Then add the song and text last. For finer control, combine the clips in an editor such as Edits, CapCut or a desktop editor, cut each one short, and switch clips on the song's beats so the reel feels edited, not stitched.

You have eight clips from one afternoon: the coffee, the walk, the shop, the view. Each one is fine on its own. Put them together and the reel feels like a camera roll on autoplay: every clip runs too long, the order is random and the song does its own thing underneath. Adding several clips to a reel takes a few taps. Making them read as one video is about three choices: which clips, how long each one stays, and where the cuts fall.

How do you make a reel with multiple clips in Instagram?

Instagram's own Reels editor takes several clips at once.

  1. Tap + and choose Reel.
  2. In the camera roll, tap the select option (an icon of stacked squares in most versions) so you can pick more than one.
  3. Tap the clips in the order you want them to play. The number on each one is its position.
  4. Tap Next. The clips sit side by side on the timeline.
  5. Tap a clip to trim it, hold and drag it to move it, or delete it.
  6. Add the song, then text, then post.

Instagram moves its buttons around between versions, so if you don't see the select icon, look for a Select label or long-press the first clip. You can also record clips one after another with the camera; each recording becomes its own clip on the timeline.

One limit to know: once the reel is posted, the clips and their order are fixed. Editing a reel after posting lists what you can still change.

How do you pick and order the clips?

Most multi-clip reels that feel random have no order at all. A simple one fixes that:

  • Open with the strongest shot, not the first one you filmed. The first second decides whether people stay (hooks for the first three seconds has more).
  • Group by place or action. Outside, then inside. Raw ingredients, then the pan, then the plate.
  • End on the payoff. The finished dish, the view, the reveal. Let that clip run the longest.
  • Drop clips that repeat a point. Two near-identical shots of the same street slow the reel down without adding anything.

Eight clips can easily be cut to five. Fewer, sharper clips beat more, longer ones.

How long should each clip be?

Most clips in a fast reel stay on screen for one to three seconds; a talking clip or the final shot can run longer. A reel with ten clips of six seconds each is a minute of video where nothing changes often enough.

The easy way to set the length is the song. At a common tempo of around 120 beats per minute, one beat is half a second. A clip that lasts two or four beats stays on for one or two seconds. How many cuts should a reel have? shows how to judge the count for your reel's length.

How do you make the cuts between clips land on the beat?

This is what makes a multi-clip reel feel edited. When the picture changes on a beat, the viewer feels the cut as part of the music. When it changes half a beat early, the reel feels off even if nobody can say why.

  1. Choose the song before you trim. The beat decides the clip lengths, not the other way round.
  2. Find the beats. Tap along to the song, or use an editor that marks the beats on the waveform. Finding the BPM of a song explains the numbers.
  3. Cut each clip so it ends on a beat. Every beat for a fast reel, every second beat or every downbeat for a calmer one (what a downbeat is).
  4. Keep the clips' own sound low or muted, so it doesn't fight the song.

How to cut a video to the beat goes through the whole method step by step.

Should you use transitions between clips?

Usually a plain cut is best. A cut on the beat is cleaner than a spin or a zoom on every clip, and it keeps the reel from looking like a template. Save a transition for one moment that earns it, such as the change from before to after. If you want a cut that feels smooth without an effect, line up similar shapes or movement in the two clips: that's a match cut. Reel transitions covers the ones worth using.

Can you make a multi-clip reel on a computer?

Yes. In Easy Reels you add your clips and photos to a folder in your library and pick a song. Beats are detected automatically, and each section of the reel switches clips on the music: every beat, every second beat, downbeats or a smart mix. You can move or delete cuts on the waveform, and swap, trim or re-roll any clip. Then you add text and a colour filter, preview it in the browser and render a vertical MP4.

Save that setup as a template (song, folders, text, look) and the next reel cuts fresh clips from the same folders with one click. Easy Reels is free for 7 days, then $29 a month; nothing is charged during the trial and you can cancel anytime (plans and prices). Start the free trial with a folder of clips you already have.

Common questions

How many clips can you put in one Instagram reel?

Enough for any normal reel. Instagram's limit has changed over time, so if it stops you from adding more, combine some clips in another editor first and upload the result as one video.

Can you add photos and videos to the same reel?

Yes. Instagram, Edits and CapCut all let you mix photos and video clips on one timeline. Give each photo the same length as the clips around it so the rhythm doesn't break. Photo slideshow reels has tips for stills.

Why do my clips get cut off when I add music?

The reel's length follows the clips, and some songs have a set length in Instagram. If the end gets cut, trim the clips so their total fits the part of the song you picked, or choose a longer part of the song.

How do you change the order of clips in a reel?

Before posting, hold a clip on the timeline and drag it to a new spot. After posting you can't; edit the clips again, post the new version and archive the old one.

What's the difference between combining clips and stitching a reel?

Combining clips means putting your own videos together in one reel. Stitching (or remixing) means adding your clip next to or after someone else's public reel. This post covers the first.
