How to edit reels on a Mac: 5 ways, and which to pick

Move the clips from your phone with AirDrop or Photos, edit on a vertical 9:16 timeline (1080×1920), and export an H.264 MP4. CapCut's desktop app and DaVinci Resolve are free and both do vertical; Final Cut Pro does it with a custom format; iMovie is built around widescreen. A browser app like Easy Reels needs no install and cuts clips to a song's beats, and on Ultra you can also edit from Claude or ChatGPT on the Mac.

A bigger screen, a real keyboard and every file in one place: editing on a Mac beats squinting at a phone once a reel has more than three clips. What trips people up is the shape. Most Mac editors start you on a widescreen project, and a reel needs a tall one.

How do you get phone footage onto the Mac?

Do this first, and do it without shrinking the files.

  1. AirDrop is the quickest from an iPhone. Select the clips in Photos, share, pick your Mac. They land in Downloads at full quality.
  2. Photos with iCloud works if you'd rather not pick files one by one, as long as the Mac downloads originals (Photos, Settings, iCloud, "Download Originals to this Mac").
  3. A cable and Image Capture is the fallback for Android phones and for big batches.

Avoid sending clips to yourself through a messaging app. Most of them compress the video on the way, and you can't get that quality back in the edit.

CapCut on the Mac

Create a project, set the ratio to 9:16 and drop the clips in. Auto captions and the template library are the reasons people use it. Some features sit behind the paid tier, and that line moves, so check before you build a workflow on one. CapCut alternatives covers when it stops fitting.

DaVinci Resolve

The free version is a full professional editor. In the project settings set the timeline resolution to 1080×1920 (it has a vertical option) before you add a clip. Pick it when colour matters most to you; it's also the slowest of these to learn.

Final Cut Pro

When you create a project, choose a custom video format and type 1080 × 1920. Everything else works as normal. Worth it if you already edit long-form on the Mac.

iMovie

iMovie on the Mac is built around widescreen projects and has no vertical setting. You can edit there and crop afterwards, but you'll fight it the whole way. If you like iMovie, the iPhone version handles vertical better.

What about editing in the browser?

Easy Reels runs in Safari or Chrome, so there's nothing to install on the Mac. It's built for one job: you upload clips and a song, it finds the beats, cuts the clips onto them and renders a 1440×2560 vertical MP4. The edit is saved as a template, so the next video, or a batch of 10 on Pro and 50 on Ultra, comes from the same recipe. How to cut a video to the beat explains what it automates.

On Ultra you can also skip the timeline. Connect Easy Reels to Claude Desktop or ChatGPT on the Mac, describe the reel, and the AI writes the edit while Easy Reels renders it from your own clips. Can ChatGPT edit videos? shows how that works.

Which export settings should a Mac reel use?

Whatever the editor, export with these:

  • Size: 1080×1920 (or 1440×2560 if your editor can), 9:16
  • Format: MP4, H.264, sound included
  • Frame rate: the same as the footage, usually 30 fps
  • Length: what the idea needs, not the platform maximum

Keep titles and captions inside the safe area so the app's buttons don't cover them: vertical video size has the margins. Why Instagram ruins your video quality explains the rest of the export.

How do you post it from the Mac?

You don't need the phone for that either. instagram.com uploads reels from a browser, and Meta Business Suite schedules them. How to post reels from a computer compares the routes.

Common questions

What is the best free app to edit reels on a Mac?

CapCut's desktop app for speed and captions, DaVinci Resolve for control and colour. Both do vertical video for free.

Can you make a vertical video in iMovie on a Mac?

Not natively. iMovie on the Mac works in widescreen; the iPhone version and the other editors above handle 9:16 directly.

Do I need a powerful Mac to edit reels?

Not for short vertical clips. A browser app does the rendering on its own servers, so even an older laptop is enough there.

Can I edit reels on a Mac without an editing app?

Yes. Easy Reels runs in the browser, and on Ultra you can describe the video to Claude or ChatGPT and get the finished MP4 back.
