A UGC creator is paid to produce short vertical video that a brand posts from its own account or runs as an ad. It is production work, not influencing, and it does not require followers, which is why it is the one creator route open to an account with no audience. You get hired on a portfolio of three to five spec videos, you are paid per deliverable, and the job is won on turnaround and reliability far more than on production value.

UGC is the most misunderstood creator job, mostly because the name is wrong. "User-generated content" originally meant content users made for free; the paid version is something else entirely: freelance video production, sold to brands, delivered as files.

Getting that straight changes everything about how you approach it.

## What the job is, and is not

| | UGC creator | Influencer |
|---|---|---|
| Who posts it | The brand | You |
| Audience needed | None | Yes, that is the product |
| Paid for | The file | The reach |
| Typical rate | Per video | Per campaign |
| Your face | Often, not always | Yes |
| Repeat work | Common | Campaign by campaign |

You are a supplier, not a media channel. The brand buys a video it can post organically or push as a paid ad, and the ads use case is the bigger market, because a brand running paid social burns through creative fast and needs new variations constantly.

**This is why no audience is required.** It is also why the work is steady if you are good at it: a brand that finds a reliable supplier of ad creative does not want to re-solve that problem next month.

## What you actually deliver

Not "a reel". A deliverable is usually:

- **One vertical video**, 1080 × 1920, 15–30 seconds: [vertical video size](https://easyreels.io/blog/vertical-video-dimensions).
- **Clean audio**, either your voice or the ambient sound.
- **No captions burned in**, unless asked. Brands add their own.
- **Raw clips as well**, increasingly requested so their team can recut.
- **Two or three hook variations** of the same video, which is where the ads money is.

That last one is the professional tell. A brand testing creative wants the same video with three different openings, because the opening is what they are testing, which is the same reason [the first three seconds](https://easyreels.io/blog/reel-hooks-first-three-seconds) is the highest-impact thing on any short video.

## What to charge

Rates vary enormously by market and by what is included. The structure matters more than the number:

| Item | Typical shape |
|---|---|
| One video | A base rate |
| Extra hook variations | Smaller add-on each |
| Raw footage | Add-on |
| Usage rights for paid ads | A significant multiplier |
| Exclusivity in a category | Another multiplier |
| Revisions | One round included, then billed |

**Usage rights are where beginners lose money.** A video posted organically once is worth far less than the same video run as a paid ad for six months across three countries. Quote the base rate for organic use and price paid usage separately, with a time limit. If you do not, you have sold a perpetual ad asset for the price of a post.

Do not work for free product alone. A sample of the product to film is normal; the product *as payment* is a rate of zero with extra steps.

## Getting the first three clients

Nobody hires an empty portfolio, and the fix is straightforward: make videos for brands that did not ask.

1. **Pick three products you already own** in a category you want to work in.
2. **Make one spec video each**, to the standard you would deliver.
3. **Put them somewhere linkable**: a simple page or a portfolio site. Not a personal feed.
4. **Email the brands**, and the ones next to them. Short: what you make, the link, the rate, your turnaround.
5. **Apply on the platforms** (brands post briefs on several marketplaces) while the outreach runs. Rates there are lower and the volume is real.

Then the part that compounds: **be easy to work with**. Deliver on the day you said, name the files sensibly, accept notes without argument. The creators who stay booked are not the best filmmakers; they are the ones whose work arrives when promised. That is the same lesson as [running reels for clients](https://easyreels.io/blog/reels-for-clients), and it is the whole business.

## What the work is actually like

Six months in, the job is not creative. It is the same shape of video, for a different product, again, because that shape is what converts and the brand is not paying you to experiment with it.

That is the honest description, and it is also the thing that decides whether this pays. The rate is per deliverable, so your income is production speed × rate, and production speed is the only one of those you control day to day.

Which is where the volume problem arrives: three brands × four videos × three hook variations is thirty-six exports a month. Done on a timeline, that is a full-time job at part-time money.

Two things fix it, and neither is working faster:

- **A fixed format.** One template, one grade, one text treatment, so each video is assembly rather than design: [text overlays that stay on brand](https://easyreels.io/blog/reusable-text-overlays) and [colour grading short video](https://easyreels.io/blog/color-grading-short-video).
- **Batch production.** [Easy Reels](https://easyreels.io/) is the tool for that half: a track, a folder of clips and a template in, finished 1440 × 2560 files out, ten or fifty at a time, with the cuts on the beat because they came from the audio. Hook variations of one video are a rerun rather than a re-edit. [Batch-creating reels](https://easyreels.io/blog/batch-create-reels) is the workflow.

## Filming it

The production bar is deliberately low: brands want it to look like a customer made it, not like an agency did.

- **Phone, natural light, steady.** [Filming b-roll on a phone that cuts well](https://easyreels.io/blog/filming-b-roll-on-a-phone).
- **Film more coverage than you need.** Recuts are the deliverable.
- **Record audio properly.** Bad sound reads as amateur faster than bad footage.
- **Show the product being used**, not held: [reels that sell a product without looking like an ad](https://easyreels.io/blog/product-video-reels).
- **Export clean**, no watermark, no re-save from another app: [why Instagram ruins your video quality](https://easyreels.io/blog/reel-video-quality).

## Common questions

### Do I need followers to be a UGC creator?

No, and that is the point of the job. You are selling video files to a brand that posts them, so your own audience is irrelevant to the transaction. A portfolio replaces it.

### How much do UGC creators charge?

It varies widely by market. What matters more than the number is charging separately for paid-ad usage rights and for extra hook variations: the base rate should cover one organic post, not perpetual advertising.

### Do I have to show my face?

Often but not always. Hands, voiceover and product-only videos are common deliverables, particularly for the ad variations: [faceless reels](https://easyreels.io/blog/faceless-reels) covers that production style.

### How do I find brands to work with?

Spec videos for products you already own, then direct email, plus the UGC marketplaces for volume while the outreach builds. The marketplaces pay less and answer the cold-start problem.

### Is UGC still worth getting into?

The market is more crowded than it was and brands running paid social need new creative continuously, which is a structural demand that has not gone away. It rewards reliability and turnaround more than it rewards talent.
